This weekend, Brazilian singer, Marilia Mendonca was killed in a plane crash. The 26-year old singer was traveling on a small plane to a show in Minas Gerais. She and four other people on her crew were on the plane that left for Santa Genoveva on Friday afternoon.
The plane crashed by a waterfall in Piedad de Caratinga in Vale do Rio Doce. There were five people on the plane, the pilot, co-pilot, her producer, Henrique Ribeiro, and her uncle Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho and they were all found dead at the scene.

There is a horrifying and heartbreaking video of the aftermath of the crash and in it, we can see the first responders taking care of the remains. We can also see them taking bodies out of the plane. As of right now, there is no known cause of the crash and the government is leading an investigation into what happened. There are plenty of theories, but they have not been released yet.
The death of Mendonca was confirmed on Friday afternoon in a tweet from the Secretaria Especial da Cultura do Ministerio do Turismo. Then, her friend, Anitta, also known as the “Girl from Rio” posted on her Instagram account. She posted a picture of the two of them together and wrote to her, “Yesterday I told you that I love you, YESTERDAY. I can’t believe this happened. Why this accident, my God???”
Mendonca had posted just a few hours before her flight and was excited about the shows on the weekend and she shared a video about that region’s delicious food as well. Her fans are heartbroken and have been posting messages on her social media accounts ever since the word got out that she was killed.
She was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2017 for best sertaneja music album. She also won the Grammy in 2019 for her album Todos os Cantos. Even Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, said that she was “one of the greatest artists of her generation.” Brazilians have started to put up memorials around their cities to honor her and the others who died in the crash.
