Halloween is meant to all be in good fun, but this year one Japanese man turned the trick-or-treating night into a true horror when he went on a knifing rampage on a busy train in Tokyo.

Dressed as the Joker, the man was brandishing a long, bloodied knife—something that would ordinarily spark fear on the subway, but not on a night where blood smeared costumes and props are just the norm. However, it soon became apparent that this was no mere prop.

According to terrified witnesses, and the man started swinging the knife around on the train, stabbing upward of 10 people according to police reports.

Video was captured from inside the subway car of the train as it headed toward Tokyo’s super busy Shinjuku station. Fearing for their lives, passengers rushed to another carriage, huddling together, as far away from the perpetrator as possible.

After the stabbing frenzy, the man. Who turned out to be only 24 years old, then began dousing the interior of the carriage  with a presumed  liquid accelerant and attempted to set the train on fire.

As smoke began filling the carriage, now at a station, panicked passengers began jumping from train windows to escape. All up, police report that at least 17 people were injured, but thankfully no deaths occurred.

Creepily, the madman then calmly took a seat, lit a cigarette and took in the chaotic scene he caused. Even as folks, safely on the train platform, took photos of him through the windows, he simply sat back in his Joker costume, legs crossed and a blank expression on his face.

Police showed up quickly and arrested the offender without incident. Quietly, he went with police, being charged with attempted murder amongst a host of other indictments.

No clear motive has been procured from the culprit at time of writing.

Scary as this stabbing rampage was, it is not unheard of in Tokyo. Only 3 months ago, during the Tokyo Olympic Games, another man stabbed nearly a dozen people on a busy train.
