Shaquille O’Neal was forced to relinquish his ownership stake in the Kings earlier this year, but the legend told TMZ Sports that he’d like to return to the ownership ranks… but this time, he wants to be “heavily involved!”
O’Neal appeared on Babcock’s “TMZ Sports” TV show (weekdays on FS1), when he was asked about potential ownership interest in the Phoenix Suns, a club Shaq previously played for near the end of his career. While Shaq has stated that there has been no movement with the Suns, he does want to buy an NBA team. “I haven’t had any discussions with my partners, so I can’t make the statement yet, but we’re still looking to be heavily involved in purchasing an NBA team,” Shaq told them.
NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal VERY Interested In Purchasing NBA Team
Shaq is no stranger to sports team ownership. He held a tiny ownership stake in the Sacramento Kings, which he sold in January (he had a conflict with another business). O’Neal first acquired control in 2013. The majority owner is Vivek Ranadive, an Indian-American business executive. Shaq was also questioned if he was interested in owning an NFL team.
“Yeah, but this time around when I purchase a team, I want to be heavily involved. I would like it to be in a place where I’m living at. If it ain’t the Dolphins, the Cowboys, or the Raiders, and those teams are way too expensive for me, but my main man JB can write that check!”
Shaq stated a few months ago that he was interested in purchasing Robert Sarver’s Phoenix franchise, but did not want to compete with Jeff Bezos (or “Big Man JB,” as Shaq refers to him), who was apparently interested in acquiring the team. However, Bezos and Jay-Z have set their sights on the Washington Commanders.
