Paramount+‘s ‘Halo’ series first episode is out and you probably won’t hear this from many other places, but this thing is absolute garbage… It’s like they made a Batman series and the suit looked amazing, but then they changed his personality, changed Alfred, changed the atmosphere, created a storyline that doesn’t fit but once in a while would throw in a reference.
When some of the best parts were just references to the games like recharging his shield in the middle of a firefight or the suit in general, you’re going to have problems. Right now, all I see are sites that are defending the show and praising it for Master Chief taking off his helmet. What? No… that’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
Paramount+ ‘Halo’ Series Is GARBAGE – What Were They Thinking?
Other people are saying that the show is nothing like the games, and that’s why it’s good… No. It’s a video game series… IT SHOULD BE BASED ON THE GAMES. Why do we keep taking amazing stories and lore and bastardizing them for the general public? It does nothing but alienates your fanbase and while you might make a few bucks, you lose all credibility.
One of the most important things in the game series is the character of Master Chief (obviously), yet in this show, they completely change what he sounds like, who he is, and even reveal his face in the very first episode. It’s insulting. We’ve never been revealed Master Chief’s identity (except when he was a young boy), and his helmet is in essence his face and who he is. Master Chief suddenly sounds like Christian Bale as Batman. We’re supposed to imprint our own identity on him, and create the hero we believe he is.
This still has another seven episodes in season one and has already been renewed for a second season which is mind-boggling to me and anyone who has played the games. Keep in mind, I’m no expert either. I’m a gamer, and I’ve played through the series, but there are fans who love this material as much as I love Star Wars or Batman, and if I’m noticing the terrible changes, they must be noticing everything.
The whole idea of Master Chief going rogue, and having his memory wiped makes no sense. Fleet command seemed boring and it didn’t feel like there was an intergalactic war going on at all. The scale just isn’t there. Sure, I understand it’s the first episode, but isn’t that the point? To set the stage for the rest of the series?
To make things worse, the writers, producers (and apparently most of the cast) have never played the Halo series at all. Why do we keep letting these people make out video game shows and films? It makes no sense. Everything would be so much better if we had fans of the stuff… making the stuff!
You don’t have to be a die-hard fan to be able to look at this first episode and realize that they’ve already butchered a lot of the story, and mix-matched lore, Spartans, and more to create whatever brew this is. I have little hope for the rest of the series, and the first episode has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Don’t get me wrong, there are (very few) cool things, but really, they’re just references to the games like I mentioned earlier. The show itself looks good, the suits don’t look too bulky and weighed down and some of the sound effects (like the shield) are pulled right from the game, but the rest of it I could never watch again and be fine with.
Good luck with 2 whole seasons of this.
