She might be canceled, but that doesn’t mean her name is going to disappear forever. There are new reports that say JK Rowling will be featured in a new Harry Potter special, but only in archive footage. This comes after the writer was canceled for controversial tweets she made in which she showed her support for a “transphobic” researcher. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, JK Rowling will be featured in a Harry Potter 20th reunion special, but in just archive clips. The HBO Max special, called Return to Hogwarts, will have Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reunite for the 20th anniversary of the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Since the films were released, Rowling, the author of the boy wizard books, has become a controversial figure over her comments on gender identity.

“Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you,” Rowling tweeted back in 2019. “Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?”

She added the hashtags “#IStandWithMaya” and “ThisIsNotADrill,” making it clear that she was referring to Maya Forstater, a British researcher who lost her job at a nonprofit think tank following a series of tweets that were criticized as transphobic.

“Some transgender people have cosmetic surgery, but most retain their birth genitals,” Forstater wrote in one tweet. “Everyone’s equality and safety should be protected, but women and girls lose out on privacy, safety and fairness if males are allowed into changing rooms, dormitories, prisons, sports teams.”

The 56-year-old has said she was partly motivated to speak out about transgender issues because of her experience of domestic abuse and sexual assault. Following the controversy, it was rumoured that she would be excluded from the much-anticipated Harry Potter reunion, however she did appear, but only through archived footage from a 2019 interview.
