Despite the fact that more and more people from all over the world are getting vaccinated and countries are opening up their borders to travelers again, the music industry is still on pause, especially when it comes to live concerts, music festivals and tours.
In fact, there’s a new report that says fans in the UK can forget about going to any of their beloved music festivals this year as it’s simply not going to happen. And that’s not just because of Covid-19, but also because of the lack of government help and insurance. Here’s what you need to know.
Summer Festivals In The UK Are Not Happening This Year
Reports say that music festivals are facing another “lost summer” due to the British government’s decision not to introduce a coronavirus insurance scheme. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s (DCMS) report into the future of the UK’s summer circuit said the Government had “refused to take multiple opportunities” to address the concerns of organizers.
Another summer without music, musicians, fans, and worse, money, would not only cause the demise of many smaller festivals, but could threaten the long-term future of the sector as companies in the supply chain also close down and skilled specialist staff move to other jobs.
Conservative MP Julian Knight is taking action as he believes that the music industry in the UK will be in serious trouble if something is not done fast to help save it. The festivals in the UK contribute to over a billion pounds to the UK economy and supports 85,000 jobs.
“It has been made very clear to us that the vast majority of music festivals do not have the financial resilience to cover the costs of another year of late-notice cancellations,” he said.
“If the commercial insurance market won’t step in, ministers must, and urgently: events need to know now whether the government will back them, or they simply won’t take place this year. There’s still time to get the music playing, but no more room for excuses.”
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “We are continuing to work flat out to support festivals and live events. Our Events Research Program has explored how festivals can get back up and running safely and festival organizers have received more than £34 million from our unprecedented Culture Recovery Fund, with more support on the way.”
The spokesperson added, “We will continue to look at what assistance may be required as we move cautiously but irreversibly through the road map, including looking at the issue of indemnity cover.”
