Italian director Louis Nero, and husband to Hollywood legend Vanessa Redgrave, has defended his decision to cast disgraced actor, Kevin Spacey in his new drama L’uomo che disegnò Dio, translated as The Man Who Drew God.

The announcement of Spacey’s “comeback” has been met with serious online backlash. The Italian film will herald the Oscar winner’s first role since multiple accusation of sexual misconduct saw him fired from both Netflix’s House of Cards and Ridley Scott directed movie, All the Money in the World. Though the film was in post-production, it was reshot with Christopher Plummer in Spacey’s role.

Louis Nero, the film’s producer, said the allegations against Spacey were of no concern to the L’uomo che disegnò Dio production team.

“In Italy, we don’t know details on everything, so we don’t speak about what we don’t know about,” Nero said. “I cannot speak about these things. I only know that Kevin is a great actor. That was my concern, and no more than that.”

Vanessa Redgrave was set to make an appearance in the film, however, her representatives say the 84 year old actress is no longer involved with the project.

Vanessa was to play a small role as a piano teacher. It has not been noted if her decision to bow out of the film has to do with the push against Spacey returning to work or if her work schedule would not allow it.

There have been many rumors surrounding this film, including reports the film was about child sex abuse. Louis Nero was quick to refute this saying, “It does not involve pedophilia, as I’ve read in the media. This is wrong.”

There are also varying accounts as to the size of Spacey’s role with some calling it a cameo, and others saying his police officer character is one of the leads.

Franco Nero , who will direct and star has said, “I’m very happy Kevin agreed to participate in my film. I consider him a great actor and I can’t wait to start the movie.”
