Okay, not really. It’s not like YouTuber Anthony Quintal, known by viewers Lohanthony was spotted on a completely different social media account or anything. He’s still on Lohanthony, but… all of his old videos have disappeared. He disappeared off instagram sometime in May, and has resurfaced now, with a brand new identity… in Christ.
Now, don’t get us wrong, we here at DSD champion all spiritual journeys and if they genuinely help the person in question, then that’s a wonderful thing and we’ll stand behind it, but some of the language that Lohanthony was using in his most recent uploads has some people, specifically the LGBT+ community and all of us allies here on the side wondering, did Lohanthony go into gay conversion therapy?

Now, first and foremost, he’s said that he hasn’t. He said that this was a spiritual journey that he’s taken for himself. A journey that seems to have ended with Lohanthony choosing to live a life of Christian Celibacy. There is nothing inherently wrong with being celibate, it’s not like, at least not to our knowledge, he broke someone’s heart over it.
If you choose to be celibate, then that affects only your life. But if you’re advocating for others to do the same, under the same pretenses, then that can be really harmful. Also, he seemed to blame his ‘same sex attraction’ on the fact that he got addicted to drugs and alcohol at one point and that is just… kind of a reach.
In one of his videos entitled “Jesus delivers… surviving sexuality” he details the fact that he got molested as a child (trigger warning, that video does talk about sexual abuse, however not in really graphic detail, because youtube guidelines.) and the fact that it happened before he was even in grade school and that, at least in his line of logic.
This is what made him start questioning his sexuality at a young age and by the time he was in 6th grade he said that he knew he didn’t want romantic attention “from women”. He also uses the term “same sex attraction” in the video, which is a term used in a lot of christian conversion therapy. The videos also don’t really seem like Lohanthony, it seems like he’s lost a big part of himself.
I think that’s what’s making us worry so much, that this person who was so out and so proud of it at such a young age has now backpedaled and done such a complete 180 that we worry that he may be doing it for the wrong reasons, and we also worry that he’s laying blame where blame isn’t to be laid, necessarily.
Just because one is attracted to the same gender it does not mean that one is more prone to harmful addictions, I’ve known plenty of people who are in the LGBT community who profess to believe in the same God that Lohanthony does who do not engage in any kind of addictions and who are in perfectly healthy relationships.
That being said, just to hear him talk, it doesn’t look like Lohanthony was having the greatest time of it. Obviously, he felt used and abused by the people around him, and he wanted something different and more fulfilling for his life. That’s fine, but he seemed to have left a gigantic piece of himself and we’re not sure if that decision is healthy.
Still, since he has just been gone since May, it looks like this may just be a recent development in his life. I”ve watched the videos and he seems to be a brand new Christian who’s so on fire for God that he doesn’t realize that some of his rhetoric may harm other people because he genuinely doesn’t mean it that way. Right now, he’s just into sharing his testimony, but the way he words things… is worrisome.
He also seems to be very against lust in any form. Okay, you know what, fair. That’s fair, completely fair. The bible looks down upon lust and I can see where he would take a step back from hookups and grindr culture and do the celibate thing for awhile.
What I do sincerely hope however, is that this foray into Christian Celibacy (his words, not mine) has not caused him to deny an integral part of himself because that will eventually lead to misery on his part.
However Lohanthony’s journey ends up, we hope the best for him, and that perhaps, if the opportunity arises for a relationship then maybe he can go forth and practice sexual integrity, rather than completely cutting himself off from having any kind of loving relationship, if he so desires. Right now, this is new, so we’ll keep you updated on how this ends up. Stay tuned!!!
