The Gift, also known as Atiye is set to release on Netflix later this month. It’s a new series that plays on the archaeological dig site of Göbeklitepe and it’s mysteries. According to a summary on IMDB, “The Gift follows Atiye, with her family and lover Ozan, who leads a simple and happy life in Istanbul until her life changes with a discovery made in Göbeklitepe, the world’s oldest temple. The archaeologist Erhan, who carries out excavations in the region, discovers a symbol that reveals the mystical relationship between Atiye and Göbeklitepe. Atiye chases after this mysterious event that opens her a different door. She decides to look for her own past in the ancient temple. As this mystery is revealed, Atiye will question everything between the past and the future, between the true and the spiritual.”

    What Is Göbeklitepe?

Okay, so what is Göbeklitepe? According to Wikipedia, “Göbekli Tepe is an archaeological site in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey approximately 12 km northeast of the city of Şanlıurfa.” It is an interesting site that dates back 10,000 years ago. The fact that hunter-gatherer peoples could organize the construction of such a complex site as far back as the 10th or 11th millennium BC not only revolutionizes our understanding of their culture but also poses a new way to look at the conventional view of the rise of civilization.

If you are very interested and wish to learn more about the historical site, I recommend Graham Hancock. Hancock has several books about the temple, dating back to the 1990s and has been a big proponent of it being one of mankind’s first man made structures.

    Atiye & Her Mystical Relationship

“Ever since I can remember, I’ve been painting this symbol,” is one of Atiye’s first lines in the short teaser Netflix put on YouTube a few days ago. We continue on to see her putting on an art exhibition with dozens of her paintings, all containing the same symbol. It is haunting and beautiful as we look at each one but causes Erhan, the archaeologist to begin questioning everything.

Erhan had just discovered the same symbol at his excavation in Göbeklitepe and is convinced there must be some connection between the ancient temple and Atiye. How he knew to come find Atiye after is discovery we don’t know yet but perhaps we’ll get a full-fledge trailer before the release date.

    ‘The Gift’

We still have a lot of questions to ask about this mysterious new show and how it’s characters will form but the teaser has been enough to hook a lot of potential viewers in already. It is short, concise and leaves you wondering.

Atiye is portrayed by Turkish actress Beren Saat (Forbidden Love) and Turkish actor Mehmet Günsür (Magnificent Century) will be Erhan. The Gift looks to be an interesting tale of fantasy and mystery mixed with the unique historical temple of Göbeklitepe.

Göbeklitepe has an interesting story all it’s own so combining truth and fiction will be a fun ride through the world. About the only thing that audiences in the United States and other English countries should be aware of is since it is set in Turkey, each episode will be spoken in the native tongue, hence, subtitles will be necessary for most viewers.

I’ll for one be front and center upon release and have my popcorn ready because this tale looks too interesting to pass up.

You can catch the first episode of The Gift on Netflix, December 27th and check out the teaser below!
