Academy Award winner and bonafide acting legend Christopher Plummer died ‘quite peacefully’ at his Connecticut home Friday morning. He was 91-years old.
Plummer’s wife, English actress Elaine Plummer said, “It’s so sad but he had a great life.” She further explained, “He had a fall, unfortunately. He hit his head against my car and he was taken to the hospital. They repaired the leaks and he came home, but it was a really horrible accident”. She finished by saying, “He fought the good fight but eventually I think he thought … ‘Exit stage right.”‘
Acting legend Christopher Plummer has died after a ‘nasty fall’
Plummer–who earned his first Oscar at age 82, making him the oldest ever Oscar winner in an acting category–was a working actor until the end. Most recently he appeared on television show Departure, his last scenes filmed from his home as a Covid-19 precaution.
Plummer’s most famous role, however, was that of Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 film adaptation of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Sound Of Music opposite Julie Andrews.
Plummer was open about his disdain for the film that turned him into a household name. Portraying the stern and patriotic Austrian Naval Captain, widower and father of 7 was pivotal in his acting career, yet he playfully referred to the movie as “The Sound of Mucus.”
He did however, have only praise for Andrews who played the singing nun turned governess who captured his frosty heart. He was quoted as saying that working with Andrews was like “getting hit over the head with a Valentine”. He also admitted to having wonderful memories of filming the 1966 Best Picture Oscar recipient and forged a lifelong friendship with ray-of-sunshine, Andrews.
The late actor was born in 1929 in Toronto, Canada and was the descendent of John Abbot, Canada’s third Prime Minister serving from 1891 to 1892
Rest in Peace, Christopher, you and your talents will be missed.
