Tom Cruise is back but then again, did he ever really leave? There are new reports that say the Hollywood actor has broken a box office record with his Top Gun sequel. Here’s what you need to know.

The action film Top Gun: Maverick was expected to have a big opening and it did not disappoint, giving Tom Cruise his first-ever opening weekend to top $100 million in the country. The movie – which had its release delayed two years by the Covid-19 pandemic – notched $124 million for the first three days of the weekend and took in the same amount overseas, despite not playing in China or Russia. This makes the movie Cruise’s first-ever movie to make over $100 million during its opening weekend. Wowzers.

Cruise once again plays cocky (if greyer) navy test pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now a captain, as he trains to bomb a rogue nation’s uranium enrichment facility. The supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller and Jon Hamm; original Top Gun veteran Val (Iceman) Kilmer appears briefly.

It has been 35 years since Top Gun’s 1986 release, but the sequel will see Cruise reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. At the premiere, which took place on the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, Mr Cruise said he had made it his personal mission to bring the Top Gun sequel to cinemas despite delays caused by Covid. The Hollywood star said it had been a case of “now or never” when discussing plans for the sequel, which comes 36 years after the release of the 1986 hit film.

Earlier this month and while in San Diego, the actor thanked fans and praised his fellow cast members. “This moment right here, getting to see everyone, no masks. This is pretty epic,” he said, speaking to Deadline at the event. “It was really now or never, it was a moment, we were looking at how to tell this story… I’ve been thinking about it and figuring it out. I thought if we’re going to go in, we have to go in now.”
