You can take the boy out of Hollywood, but there’s no way that you could ever take Hollywood out of the boy. Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance to the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick on Wednesday, as he landed in a helicopter before walking the red carpet. Video footage shows the black helicopter, which read ‘Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick’ descending while a sea of fans waved at the 59-year-old actor. Here’s what you need to know.
It has been 35 years since Top Gun’s 1986 release, but the sequel will see Cruise reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. At the premiere, which took place on the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, Mr Cruise said he had made it his personal mission to bring the Top Gun sequel to cinemas despite delays caused by Covid. The Hollywood star said it had been a case of “now or never” when discussing plans for the sequel, which comes 36 years after the release of the 1986 hit film.

After touching down and stepping out onto the USS Midway carrier in San Diego, California, the actor thanked fans and praised his fellow cast members. “This moment right here, getting to see everyone, no masks. This is pretty epic,” he said, speaking to Deadline at the event. “It was really now or never, it was a moment, we were looking at how to tell this story… I’ve been thinking about it and figuring it out. I thought if we’re going to go in, we have to go in now.”
Due to be released in cinemas on May 27, Maverick sees Cruise reprise the role of US naval aviator Pete Mitchell. Other stars include Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Monica Barbaro, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell.
