TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ spoilers indicate that at 28 weeks, the Derrico triplets were born, during an earthquake. Poor Karen, I felt so bad for her. She was in the hospital during an earthquake She said that the conditions that they were having, aftershocks namely, were prone to bring on babies and she is absolutely right, in a study done in 2005 in Chile they said that women who were subject to earthquakes during the first trimester of pregnancy were subject to having premature births and slightly smaller babies.

However, this study also said that it wasn’t the Mothers that were closest to labor that were as greatly affected by earthquakes as it was the ones who were in the first trimester of pregnancy – for those of us like me who are bad at math, that means, the first 3 months.

TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ Spoilers: the Derrico triplets enter the world.

The study said that the Mothers who experienced an earthquake during their first trimester were more likely to give birth more than a week early and have babies that were smaller in size than Moms who did not experience earthquakes in the first trimester. Interesting!

But Karen was 28 weeks along, which, again, for those of you who are like me, bad at math and have never had children before is approximately 6 months. Which meant that she was nowhere near active labor but she was past her first trimester too.

So what could have contributed to the babies coming? Well, for one thing, stress (which was what the earthquake was causing) can always cause premature birth, while the walls shook around them Karen had contractions and they were 2 minutes apart.

Also, it was stated in the first episode that  Karen has a condition called a shortened cervix, which makes her prone to premature births anyway, that coupled with the stress of being in the middle of a natural disaster was certainly not helping.

I have to hand it to her though, contracting or not, she managed to walk into that operating room accompanied by a nurse. She’s an extremely strong woman. Of course, believe what you want but I think the prayers that her family were offering up for her certainly had a hand in that too.

After some severe shaking, Karen gave birth to two girls and a little boy. The first daughter, Dawsyn, unfortunately, has a hole in her heart which she will need to get fixed as soon as possible, but she needs to get stronger first. She will need one surgery to put a stent in her heart, and then a second to actually close up the hole.

I think we all joined in when Deon bowed his head in prayer for his daughter, we’re all rooting for her. We’ll keep you updated. Stay tuned!!!
