TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ spoilers reveal a big family on TLC’ you’ve seen them all. In the past decade or so there has been a trend toward a lot of shows centering around big, particularly religious families who are very conservative in their beliefs who seem to delight in just how much of the outside world they can deprive their children of (Ahem, looking at you, Welcome to Plathville).
But recently there was an ad on TLC about a new show called Doubling Down with the Derricos, a large family of four sets of multiples who were also, surprise surprise, African American.
You could tell instantly that this family had a totally different feel than your standard typical TLC family. For one thing, they did not plan to have multiples. Their oldest child was a single birth, followed by two miscarriages and then the multiples began, and they haven’t stopped yet!
TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ Spoilers: Just one big happy family! – Doubling Down with the Derrico’s!
First it was twins, the quintuplets, then triplets (one of whom unfortunately passed a few hours after birth). There were no rounds of IVF to achieve these results, only some progesterone given to the Mom, Karen Derrico after pregnancy to help maintain viability.
There is also none of this submissive wife stuff that seems to be bandied about in other large families, this relationship is obviously a partnership, and it seems to be a healthy partnership. Everybody looks to be on the same page.
Obviously, they aren’t perfect but whatever they’re doing works and at there does not seen to be a tense power struggle behind the scenes between either spouse or even between the kids and the parents for that matter Obviously, their oldest is just 13 but she is already showing signs of wanting to be independent However, she shows it in healthy, age appropriate ways. (At least for now.)
It’s pretty obvious that the Derricos are religious and very devout about it. But they embody a more modern way of walking with God that doesn’t shut the rest of the world out. In fact their children even go to school, as evident when they were hugging their Mom bye before she went to the hospital to be put on bed rest. They go to a regular school, which is a quite a turn for big families because it seems the bigger the family on TLC the more apt they are to homeschool. We’ll see if they keep this up.
Overall, I feel like this family is a nice, fun, breath of fresh air from your regular “big famipy” shows on TLC, and I was wondering where the representation was. Stay tuned!!!
