On this past week’s episode of Doubling Down with the Derrico’s little Dawsyn Derrico had her surgery to put a stent in her heart and while she made it through the surgery, she had quite the difficult journey recovering. She contracted pneumonia and jaundice a week after her surgery and had to stay in the hospital for some extra time.
But Dawsyn proved herself to be quite the fighter. Evetually she got removed from a lot of the tubes and things that were monitoring her and we got to see, as Karen Derrico referred to it, a little bit more of her personality.
Dawsyn seems to be a very attentive baby. She followed her Mom with her eyes and seemed to be really paying attention to what was being said. Not that she could ever repeat it because newborn memories don’t really work that way, but you can tell that she definitely knows that she’s in the world and who her Mama is.

She wasn’t able to leave the hospital until a month after her surgery though, which, I’m going to assume is pretty common in these kind of preemie surgeries, especially if there’s complications that arise like in this particular situation.
One of her poor sisters though was so overwhelmed by the thought of tiny little Dawsyn having surgery that she burst into tears. She asked, “Why did Dawsyn have to get surgery?” before breaking down crying to her Dad! It was one of the Quints.
Since Papa Derrico didn’t want to overload the kid’s with worry, he decided to explain things in the best way possible, “She’s getting surgery to make her better.” the kids knew about the surgery, but they didn’t know that Dawsyn had a hole in her heart.
Some people might think that this was unnecessarily sheltering the kids but in a way, it’s not. We have to remember that all of these kids are 13 and under and when you’re a child you can only handle so much and especially for the very young ones, the world can be a scary place.
I think it’s okay that the Derricos waited until the kids are older to explain why Dawsyn needed surgery. Besides, no chid needs to be overburdened around Christmas. Stay tuned!!!
