TLC ‘Doubling Down with the Derricos’ spoilers says that in a lot of instances with large families, you have instances of siblings raising siblings to an almost uncomfortable degree. Like, in some of the larger families we’ve seen showcased on television, some of the older siblings will basically adopt their younger siblings and go into complete Mom mode, teenagers who are doing all the cooking and cleaning for their overstressed Moms who, arguably have too much on their plate. However there is one large family out there that seems to be doing things right so far, and that’s the Derricos.

Their oldest daughter, Darian has just turned 13 and is a full-fledged teenager. Whlie her parents do expect her to help out, instead of basically sequestering her with her siblings and expecting her to take on a second Mom role to the younger ones, both of her Mother and Father have stated that they want her to have a good, fun teenage life.

They want her to be able to go out and experience the fun things without always worrying about her siblings. Darian has expressed that she wants to be a good role model to her siblings, but when she says that, she says that with a a genuine smile on her face and pride and joy in her voice.

With other families, for instance, the Plaths, you could tell that while the older siblings obviously wanted to be a good influence on the kids, there was a disconnect between the kids and the parents. There was not a mutual respect there, the parents seemed disconnected from what their kids wanted and the kids seemed kind of, well, afraid of the parents.

With the Derricos we see a much healthier dynamic and I’m glad for it. I’m glad that we get to see a large family that doesn’t seem to expect their children to be mini adults and house servants. While families are not perfect, and this is early in the season yet, so far they seem to be doing a good job. I can’t wait for more from this happy family. Stay tuned!!!
