The Academy of Motion Pictures has finally announced their punishment for Will Smith after the actor slapped presenter, Chris Rock on stage at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony 2 weeks ago.
The 2022 Best Actor winner, Smith will not be allowed to attend the Academy Awards for a whole decade, nor be able to attend any of its events after it was decreed a meeting of its board of governors.
“The Board [of Governors] has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” the Academy President and CEO, David Rubin wrote in a statement after the Friday board meeting, discussing the incident.
The Academy Bans Will Smith For Ten Years
“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year,” Rubin added in a further announcement.
The Academy has also apologized for not acting directly after the slap heard around the world, saying they missed the opportunity to set an example for “our guests, viewers, and our Academy family around the world” by disavowing the display of violence.
“We fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.”
Chris Rock was also thanked in the statement for “maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”
The announcement came after the Academy was caught in a lie. They had alleged they’d asked Smith to leave the awards immediately after he assaulted Rock when in fact, it came to light that the how’s producer, Will Packer informed the actor and singer that he was allowed to stay on.
Smith, who has also seen several of his projects being shelved, not only resigned from the Academy, but it has been said he has accepted and respects the Academy’s decision without argument.
Despite pushback, Smith has not been asked to return his Best Actor statue which he won shortly after the shocking incident.
