Flashbacks showed the twins only tied the professor up after he confronted them, intending for him to sit in the sun as he did to his children. However, the twins had a crisis of conscience. They realized the man is old, so it would be worse for him to be in the hot sun all day.
Plus, they realized he would also be vulnerable to snakes and other creatures this way. So, they went back to let him go, only to find the man missing. Plus, the chair they’d tied him to and the rope. We’re guessing someone else used their actions to take out the professor themselves, and plan to use their video they took to keep the twins as the main suspects.
