Step aside Bridgerton and all of that kinky 19th century sex, because it looks like people would rather play deadly children’s game than crawl into bed with Rege-Jean Page. Ok, probably not, but there are new reports that says Squid Game has become Netflix’s biggest series launch ever, blowing past Bridgerton, which had held the title for over a year. Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, the massively popular dystopian Korean drama, which was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, is about hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly.
Squid Game Becomes Netflix’s Biggest Series Ever
Each character competing in the games has a problem at home. In one challenge, the characters are told to run towards a disturbing mannequin after it calls out ‘green light’ and must stop when ‘red light’ is shouted. If caught moving, the player is shot dead.
In the first month, Squid Game was watched by over 111 million Netflix users, making it the most popular series launch ever, beating raunchy period drama Bridgerton, which was watched by 82 million households in its first month. The company has 209 million subscribers worldwide.
It’s been noted that Netflix counts a viewer as anyone who watches the show for at least two minutes, meaning that not every viewer necessarily finished the series.
It is Netflix’s first Korean programme to become the most popular series in the US and follows from the company’s efforts to increase its offering of international shows.
