No kidding on this one. While there might be a chance that your child might have already heard about the series, or at least heard his or her 5th grade classmates talks about it, The Parents Television and Media Council has now come out to say that Netflix’s “Squid Game” should come with a warning because it is “incredibly violent.”
In fact, the parents’ council says the streaming giant should act as a gatekeeper for children against harmful content that can be easily accessed to minors. Here’s what you need to know.
The Parent And Television Media Council Says Netflix’s Squid Game Is “Incredibly Violent”
“Squid Games” is about hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept an invitation to compete in children’s games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly. Each character competing in the games has a problem at home.
And while the series has reached the number one spot in over 90 countries, it’s also drawn criticism for its violence. In other words, “Squid Game” is basically another version of “Battle Royale,” “Lord of the Flies” or “The Hunger Games.”
In one challenge, inspired by a Korean schoolyard game, characters are told to run towards a disturbing mannequin after it calls out ‘green light’ and must stop when ‘red light’ is shouted. If caught moving, the player is shot dead.
The Parents Television and Media Council (PTC) told Fox News its hoping to “alert parents” to the bevy of “Squid Game”-inspired content being uploaded across various media “so that they can take appropriate measures, whether by applying parental controls or more closely supervising their children on social media and gaming platforms, where content about or inspired by the series is being shared.”
If that weren’t enough, the controversial show has now left schools urging parents to monitor what their children are watching amid fears of copycat behavior.
A spokeswoman for one school in Kent, England said: “We are always updating our advice to the parents and children, it’s something we are constantly updating. As a response to this show and others we have put on extra lessons about violence and online harms.” So far Netflix has not made any comments about the criticism.
