When you hear someone tell you that it’s time for a siesta, believe them. Spain has become the first European country to take period pain head on. The country is looking to allow three days of workplace leave per month for women who suffer from severe menstrual pain. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, the reform, which is part of a broader draft bill on reproductive health and abortion rights, was revealed by Cadena SER radio station and is expected to be approved at next Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting. The proposal also includes other measures to improve menstrual health, like requiring schools to provide sanitary pads for girls who need them and removing taxes from their sale price in supermarkets.

If passed, it would be the first such legal entitlement in Europe. Only a handful of countries around the world have such legislation in place. Under the agreed plans, women would need to obtain a doctor’s note, with leave being paid by the country’s social security system from their first day off work.

The Spanish legislation is part of a much wider reproductive health reform which will include changes to the country’s abortion laws. In the same reform package, Spain’s left-wing government is planning to make abortion free in the country’s public health care system and allow 16- and 17-year-olds to get the procedure without parental consent.

Spanish government spokeswoman Isabel Rodríguez said the proposals represented “a new step forward for women, a new step forward for democracy.” What’s more, Spain’s equality minister Irene Montero, an outspoken feminist in the leftwing government, said it was time for government institutions to “discard taboos, stigmas and guilt regarding women’s bodies.”
