Today, Simone Biles took home a bronze medal on beam, tying her as most decorated olympic gymnast with the legendary Shannon Miller of the Magnificent 7. But she has had to face quite the backlash since she pulled out of the All-Around, The Bars, Floor, and Vault competitions.
She had a mental condition that most gymnasts refer to as ‘the twisties’, if you’ve never heard of it then that’s probably because you wouldn’t outside of your local gymnastics club. It’s where a gymnast literally can’t tell where they are in the air and can’t tell up from down, never having experienced it, I’m guessing that it’s a little like vertigo, but while you’re doing a backflip.
Simone Biles did not just ‘quit’ the Olympics
Some people were saying that Biles had “quit” the Olympics. Biles fired back saying, “I’ve worked five years for this, why would I quit? That’s not what I do.” and Biles has a point. She has spent 5 years of her life preparing to go to Tokyo so it seems a little strange that she would pull out just as things were getting good.
She did say that a lot of times that people don’t realize that there are things going on behind the scenes with a gymnast and at the end of the day, we’re all human. Bravo, Simone.
This is not the Magnificent 7, the Eastern Bloc training methods are giving way to more positive training environments, that is the reason why Biles took a few mental health days and cut out all the twisting elements to her routine, so that she wouldn’t get hurt.
But let’s say for just a moment that Biles had some other reason to come back and push through and win that bronze medal, just for cynicism’s sake, because there are those out there that do indeed think that lowly of her.
Perhaps Simone saw the people calling her “weak” on social media, perhaps she got shaded by a few teammates or coaches, saying how she let the good ol’ USA down, which would be enough to convince any patriotic person to run headling back into competition again.
But let’s just let our cynicism run wild for a moment, what if there was a brand deal on the line that Biles couldn’t back out of that required her to participate in at least some of the Olympic competition? Some sponsors might do that, considering that she was practically the face of the Tokyo Olympics for awhile there.
However, it honestly seems like that theory is maybe, just maybe, a bit too cynical, even for our trying times. Besides that, it’s just a theory and is just speculation, no tea, no shade. In the end, Simone Biles did not quit the Olympics, she did persevere, and she did go on to win a bronze medal with a score of 14.0. So the naysayers and everyone who was saying that she was a quitter can now please shut up. We’re glad she made it. Stay tuned!!!
