Senator Lindsey Graham is feeling the heat from both parties after his comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the reality is that calling for the assassination of a foreign leader is a dangerous one to make and could carry significant backlash.

Graham appeared on Fox News Thursday and called for someone in Russia to “step up to the plate” and that the “only way this ends is for somebody in Rissa to take this guy out. You would be doing your country and the world a great service.”

Then, he doubled down in a tweet, “Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate.”

Putin, of course, has been a despised war criminal who is killing civilians, flirting with nuclear war and destroying Ukraine. He’s also seemingly paranoid and unstable. It is still dangerous for American leaders to call for assassination, however, and hard to maintain a high moral ground when we do so. We learned that from the Bay of Pigs, right?

Both parties have called out Graham’s remarks from Ilhan Omar to Ted Cruz. Cruz in particular said this would be a very bad idea, “This is an exceptionally bad idea. Use massive economic sanctions; BOYCOTT Russian oil & gas; and provide military aid so the Ukrainians can defend themselves. But we should not be calling for the assassination of heads of state.”

As bad as we want Putin gone and out of office, calling for assassination could have irredeemable side effects that could not only kill people but make things very bad for the United States.

What do you think? Did Lindsey Graham cross the line when he called for an assassination and how do you think we should react to Putin? Let us know in the comments below.
