In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, director Mathew Vaughan said he would like to reboot Star Wars. He grew up a fan of the original trilogy and wants to see more of Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewy.
That makes sense as most of us did just that when we devoured the movies, comics, toys, and Expanded Universe novels redubbed Legends by Disney as they pillaged their stories.
Rebooting Star Wars Should Never be on the Table
He took a dig at the Disney sequels (haven’t we all?) by saying:
“I want to see Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewie doing their (bleep). Not some distant cousin. Who cares?”
He explained that he understands the reboot will be controversial, but he feels it’ll be so great even old fans will love it.
Um… no, we won’t. In fact, it was rebooted. It’s called Episode 7 when it was as close to a remake of A New Hope as it could get and is considered fanfiction at best by many.
Honestly, we get what he’s saying as it’s all something we all did with our figures and ships as we recreated scenes from the movies or made our own versions.
But that’s where it should end.
Missing the point
Star Wars is the perfect Greek tragedy. George Lucas studied Greek tragedies intensely and modeled the first six films after it as it was the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
It was a generational epic story that followed different generations of Skywalkers — real Skywalkers — and that set it apart from everything else and has captured our imaginations since we first saw it in theaters, on VHS, or DVD.
To try to shoehorn it into anything else is to follow in Disney’s footsteps, and fans aren’t going to fall for the nostalgia grab again.
We did, we got burned, and now Disney’s losing money in the theaters because of that and the fact the sequels are plain bad.
What would be the best course of action would be to build on the “Star Wars” universe. Forget the sequel trilogy happened, like it’s a fever dream Luke had or something, and create a trilogy in line wit Lucas’ vision that Disney tossed.
There’s already hope that Dave Filoni is doing just that as he’s brought back Grand Admiral Thrawn in “Ahsoka” and is rumored he’s working toward making Lucas’ third trilogy series.
We’ve had enough meaningless reboots and sequels. We need, want, and deserve a Star Wars series that stays true to Lucas’ original vision we all fell in love with and not another’s vision of what should be.
