It’s her birthday and she can cry if she wants to. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth is feeling super sad on her birthday and after the death of her beloved husband of 73 years, Prince Philip. Her Majesty admitted that she was still in a “period of great sadness” following his funeral service over the weekend. Here’s what you need to know.

The Queen released a statement on the royal family’s social media sites that said, “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate. While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.”

“My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days,” she wrote.

To make matters worse, Queen Elizabeth was forced to sit alone during Prince Philip’s funeral service on Saturday because of coronavirus restrictions.

“We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life,” The Queen added.

She signed the message “Elizabeth R,” a traditional sign-off, with the “R” standing for “regina,” which means “queen” in Latin.

Meanwhile, there was a separate report that said Queen Elizabeth left a love note on Prince Philip’s coffin. Some could see a wreath and handwritten letter from the queen on top of Philip’s coffin.

The royal couple famously penned love letters to each other over the course of their relationship. Their romance started when Elizabeth was just 13 years old and continued until Philip’s death.

Prince Philip is survived by the queen, 94, their four children, as well as eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
