You might want to watch your royal step, because it looks like Prince William is playing no more. There’s a new report that suggests the Duke of Cambridge is becoming “more aggressive” in his authority, despite the fact that he still has a long way to go before he becomes the next King of England.
That’s because his father, Prince Charles, will be expected to take the role behind him. Yet, sources say that William is becoming more “authoritive” as he is ditching his grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s old saying, “never complain, never explain.” Here’s what you need to know.
According to Tom Sykes of the Daily Beast, Prince William has a new strategy when it comes to the British media.
Prince William Is Becoming ‘More Aggressive’ In His Authority
He wrote this past week, “Prince William’s aggressive and apparently new legal and media strategy, which is based on rapidly rebutting stories he and his aides consider inaccurate—rather than simply ignoring them as he has done in the past. The new strategy represents the pathology of William’s desires. He has always shared with his brother Harry a deep-seated desire to take on and confront the press when they, as he sees it, tell lies about him or his family or misrepresent him.”
This comes after ITV was forced to cut some scenes in which royal correspondent Omid Scobie suggested that Prince William might have planted stories about his brother Prince Harry and his mental health.
This came after both Harry and his wife Meghan Markle hinted that not everything was “okay” in their own ITV doc and interview with royal correspondent Tom Bradby after their state trip to South Africa in 2019.
In the new ITV doc, ‘Harry and William: What Went Wrong?’ Omid Scobie, the official biographer of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, had alleged that sources from inside Kensington Palace had spoken to newspapers about concerns for Harry’s mental state.
Scobie, who was the co-author of the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle book, Finding Freedom, said in the now deleted scene, “I would say that it was no coincidence that it was shortly after that aired, even the next day, there were source quotes that came from a senior aide at Kensington Palace saying that William was worried about his brother’s mental health. That fed off such an ugly thing for Harry and it did not go unnoticed. Now whether William directed that or not, no one will ever know, but it came from his household that he is the boss of.”
In the actual version of the show which screened last night, Scobie’s comment was cut and the words, “about his brother’s mental health” were excised, after Prince William’s team had filed their complaint.
One reporter even admitted that the royal family’s relationship with the press now looks different compared to just a few short years ago.
He said, “There was a time when you could literally write anything about the royals and it was almost guaranteed you wouldn’t hear from them. However since about 2016 they have become steadily more interventionist, and seemed to be trying to create a culture where reporters were actively encouraged to go to them with stories for pre-publication guidance. What we are seeing now is an extension of that; there is more briefing to the U.K. press, more engagement—but more use of legal threats as well.”
