He’s got no time for royal drama. That’s because he’s too busy giving out awards. Prince William has announced that his Earthshot Prize will showcase some of the best global environmental innovation later this year. The Duke of Cambridge’s brainchild initiative is to help find solutions to the planet’s environmental issues. Here’s what you need to know.

The Earthshot Prize, which was founded by the Duke in 2020, aims to discover and reward the best solutions to help repair the planet over the next 10 years.

This year’s finalists will be announced in July and the five winners will then be selected by the Earthshot Prize Council which includes Prince William himself along with Sir David Attenborough, chart topper Shakira and Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett. Queen Rania of Jordan will also be on hand.

The event will be held at Alexandra Palace on October 17th and will feature iconic landmarks from across the capital when it is broadcast on BBC One and around the world.

Kensington Palace said that in the coming months they will announce the world-leading artists set to perform on the night to help celebrate the 15 finalists and the five winners who will each be awarded $1.39 million dollars.

Prince William announced on Friday morning that London will be the first host city. He said, “By hosting COP26 conference in Glasgow just weeks after our inaugural awards, the UK is helping lead the world in tackling climate change.

London is a fantastic location to showcase this leadership, spotlight the finalists and award our very first Earthshot Prize winners.”

He added, “The awards ceremony will be a truly global event, connecting people from all over the world to celebrate these inspiring leaders and their innovations to solve the world’s greatest environmental challenges.”
