He certainly wasn’t in pain. According to his family members, Prince Philip’s death on Friday at the age of 99 was a very gentle one, like “someone took him by the hand.” His daughter-in-law Sophie Wessex told reporters that the Duke of Edinburgh’s death was a peaceful one. Here’s what you need to know.

Sophie Wessex — who is married to Prince Edward, the 57-year-old youngest son of Philip and Queen Elizabeth II – said, “It was right for him, and you know, it was so gentle.”

“It was just like someone took him by the hand, and off he went,” she told reporters outside the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor.

She said it was “very, very peaceful, and that’s all you want for somebody, isn’t it.”

She said it was “very, very peaceful, and that’s all you want for somebody, isn’t it.”

The Queen was “thinking of others before herself,” the countess said, even as the monarch told son Prince Andrew that the death has left a huge void in his mother’s life.

“I think it is so much easier for the person that goes than the people who are left behind,” Sophie said.

“We are all sitting here looking at each other going ‘this is awful’. But equally, look at all the tributes. It’s just amazing,” she said of well-wishers who continued to bring flowers and cards to royal households.

The Duke of Ediburgh spent four weeks in the hospital, which was his longest stay ever. He was transferred briefly in early March to a specialist cardiac center at another London hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition.

The Palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

The Palace said more announcements would be made and added: “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
