Prince Harry’s 5 Month Paternity Leave Raising Eyebrows

There are some new mothers who barely get a few weeks off after giving birth to their child, while others get just a month or two. But if you are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, then you can enjoy the luxury of having at least five months at your disposal to spend with your newborn daughter.

In fact, Prince Harry’s five-month paternity leave is raising some eyebrows and questions in the U.S. as that amount of time is simply not the norm. Here’s what you need to know.

As many royal fans know, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their daughter Lilibet back in June. They stated that they would be taking give months off following the tot’s birth. But according to royal expert Marlene Koening, taking this much time off compared to what some other American mothers get is simply “not the norm.”

She told Britain’s Express in a new interview, “It’s sort of funny that their foundation has this sort of thing when it’s not the norm in the US because we have no national policy on paternity leave. The federal government has for federal workers an X number of weeks of paid leave.”

She added, “There is more of it but there’s no national policy. It’s interesting, five months? Most American mothers are like, ‘excuse me.’ For the majority of American moms you have to save your sick leave, your vacation pay and cobble it together unless you have a good employer.”

But according to Harry and Meghan’s royal biographer Omid Scobie, Harry and Meghan are doing things just a little bit different than your average royal.

He told Good Morning America: “We’re so used to seeing senior royals going back to work but Harry and Meghan are leading by example. They offer up to 20 weeks parental leave at Archewell – it’ll be several months off work for the pair of them.”

So far Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not made any comments about the matter.
