Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to change their surname to Spencer amid fears that King Charles held up their children’s passports.
The Applications Employed The Surname Sussex, Which Was A Switch From Mountbatten-Windsor
Apparently, the monarch didn’t want his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, to carry HRH titles. The Sussexes were said to be “exasperated” as they waited several months for their children’s passports to arrive.
The couple believes that the application was “blocked” due to the use of their royal titles. The applications employed the surname Sussex. The family had started using it publicly, but it signified a switch from the children’s original surname, Mountbatten-Windsor.
A source close to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle claimed,
“There was clear reluctance to issue passports for the kids.”
Harry supposedly had had enough of waiting. He went to his mother, Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer. He asked if he could use the Spencer surname rather than Sussex.
The insider also explained that Harry and Meghan wanted their children to have HRH titles. As they grow older, they may aspire to become working royals. However, Prince Harry wants them to decide for themselves.
On their birth certificates, the children are named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
The typical wait for passports in the UK is about three weeks. Harry and Meghan canceled standard service and went ahead to reapply using the UK Government’s 24-hour passport service.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex apparently feared that officials in the UK were “dragging their feet” with their children’s passport applications since they included Archie and Lilibet’s HRH titles.
Meghan Flaunts Her HRH Title Whenever She Gets The Chance
Meghan has sparked considerable controversy in recent months over her insistence that her friends refer to her as Sussex instead of Meghan Markle.
She even corrected her celeb friend Mindy Kaling and told her that it was so funny Kaling kept calling her Markle, as the comedian should have known better to call her Sussex.
The insider added,
“Harry was at a point where British passports for his children with their updated Sussex surnames (since the death of Queen Elizabeth II) were being blocked with a string of excuses over the course of five months.”
Buckingham Palace Courtiers believed the couple had agreed not to use their titles in any instance and would not use them in the future “out of respect for the late Queen.”
However, Harry and Meghan seem to have interpreted the agreement differently. According to them, they thought they weren’t supposed to use their titles for commercial purposes, which Meghan does constantly anyway.
Meghan flaunts her HRH title whenever she gets the chance. The simple fact that she felt the need to correct Mindy Kaling to instruct her to call her Sussex shows that she has zero respect for the institution.

In the end, Harry’s uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, advised Harry against using the Spencer surname. He told him that the legal hurdles involved were insurmountable.
The name change would also be exceedingly hurtful to King Charles, who cherishes and respects the Mountbatten surname as his father did.
