A royal analyst claims that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have trapped themselves by their own branding choices two years after they left the Royal Family.
Harry And Meghan Have Shot Themselves In The Foot With Their Branding By Having A ‘Royal Refugee Status’- Says Royal Expert Daniela Elser
In September 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced a partnership with Netflix, expressing their intent to produce inspiring, positive, and informative content.
However, journalist Daniela Elser pointed out that the couple have only announced a few projects for the streaming platform and released one biographical docuseries containing controversial statements about the Royal Family and some of their relatives.
The Harry & Meghan documentary and the couple’s various interviews and public appearances in recent months have created a very particular impression of the Duke and Duchess, according to Ms Elser, and this may be hard for them to alter. In her comments, Daniela said: “Their entire public image and business output too have thus far been founded on their royal refugee status.
“It feels a bit like Harry and Meghan have backed themselves into a brand corner and today they are not defined in the public imagination by their humanitarian work but by their willingness to pillory the royal family, at times with a large cheque attached.”
If those comments are taken to be true, then it is very significant for the following reasons. First of all, there is only so much that the Sussexes can reveal about the royals. Therefore, they need to come across as a credible alternative to them.
Secondly, once the couple burns their bridges, there is no way of going back. This is especially if things between Harry and Meghan do not work out in the long term. The response on social media was much the same. A certain subset of people made it clear that it would be hard for the couple to stay relevant without their royal titles.
One person wrote: “With their lifestyle what else do they have left to sell!! Take away their titles and what do you left – a B list actress and a pathetic poor me little boy.”
