Today is a very happy birthday for Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh’s son, James, Earl of Wessex, who turns 18.
His Parents Want Him and His Sister, Lady Louise, to Have a Normal Childhood
James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten Windsor was born on December 17, 2007. He is the youngest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II. He was born at Frimley Park Hospital, like his sister, Lady Louise.
When he was born, he was eighth in line to the throne. As of 2025, he is the 16th in line. James was christened in a ceremony held at Windsor Castle’s Private chapel in April 2008.
His royal christening gown was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 for her firstborn daughter, Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa. He was the first modern royal to wear it.
The dress was made by the Queen’s senior dresser, Angela Kelly. The garnment has since been worn by every new royal baby for their christening.
His parents went to great lengths to ensure that he and his sister, Lady Louise Windsor, had a normal upbringing. His parents raised him with the thought in mind that they would work for a living.
Sophie had told the Daily Mail that her son and daughter are free to take on HRH titles once they turn 18. However, chances are highly unlikely they would do so.
Some royal experts claim that when Prince William becomes King, he may prompt Edward and Sophie’s children to share the royal workload.
James is a very dependable kid. He had a very different childhood from much of the rest of the family. James enjoyed activities like fishing in the country and sleepovers with friends. He also enjoys after-school activities more than balcony appearances and other royal events.
Will James, Earl of Wessex, Become a Working Royal?
Edward and Sophie’s decided to protect their children so they could have a relatively normal childhood. They made ths decsion long before their children were born.
The Duke of Edinburgh title won’t be passed down to James, making it difficult to predict his future role in the monarchy.
His parents wanted to protect him and his sister from many of the “burdens” that tend to come with royal titles and public life.
Their decision meant that their kids could go through life without the press chasing after them or having to be a part of public life.
James is currently studying at Radley College in Oxfordshire. His sister, Lady Louise, is currently studying English at St. Andrew’s University.
Royal watchers are curious to see whether James will follow in his sister’s footsteps and attend the same university.
When his father, Prince Edward, received the title of the Duke of Edinburgh, James became known as the Earl of Wessex.
He and his sister share some royal historical significance. The two of them are the first royal grandchildren to use the surname Mountbatten Windsor in honor of their grandfather, Prince Philip.
However, James has made a few public appearances throughout his life, including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, her funeral, and Prince Philip’s funeral in Scotland.
18 is a significant milestone for James. It will be interesting to see if he eventually decides to become a working member of the royal family, should Prince William follow the example of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and bring his cousins into the Firm.
