Prince Charles called on world leaders for more peace around the world in light of his New Year’s message.
Prince Charles’ New Year Message Slammed-‘The Hypocrite’
It is no secret that the world is currently a very volatile place and the pandemic has only gone on to increase those existing tensions.
And given that Charles is next in line to the throne, this was seen as an attempt to put his face out to the world and encourage unity.
In his speech, he said: “As we start a New Year, we might take a moment to remember the many people around the world who are standing up for freedom and human rights.”
These issues are bound to be close to him, especially since his son Prince Harry had served within the British armed forces.
As such, it is clear that Charles wanted to have his say on the matter, as on another day, Harry could easily have suffered at the hands of the Afghanistan conflict, just like many of the families had experienced with their loved ones dying in combat.
He added: “I pray for peaceful resolutions to these conflicts and that we might all be blessed with the courage to support those in need, wherever they may be.”
His comments were admirable, but on closer inspection, it resulted in him receiving criticism for the following reasons. First of all, Charles has made numerous state visits to other countries where their human rights record has been appalling.
Take for example his previous visit to Saudi Arabia. According to Human Rights Watch, the Saudi state has one of the worst records in living memory.
Secondly, a certain subset of people felt that by virtue of Charles being born into privilege, he had no right to talk about this.
One person on Twitter shared a series of pictures showing Charles visiting Saudi Arabia. The post was captioned by the following comments: “#PrinceCharles the hypocrite.”
The best way that Charles can set an example is by making sure that all world leaders are held to account by the same standard. But by virtue of being in the monarchy, it is clear that it is difficult to be impartial.
