He’s been forced to stay underneath the radar because of all of the controversial headlines he’s been these last two years, but Prince Andrew is finally coming out of the woodwork and speaking out about the death of his beloved father, Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday at the age of 99 and now the royal family is not only mourning together in grief, but also speaking out publicly about what a great man he was. Here’s what you need to know.

Prince Andrew told the public that his mother Queen Elizabeth has been left with a huge void in her life in the wake of the death of her beloved husband. Andrew, the third of the couple’s four children, spoke as well-wishers arrived to leave floral tributes outside the gates of the royal residence in memory of Prince Philip.

Andrew said his mother “described it as having left a huge void in her life.”

“We’ve lost, almost, the grandfather of the nation,” he said. “And I feel very sorry and supportive of my mother, who’s feeling it probably more than everybody else.”

What’s more, Prince Andrew’s younger brother Prince Edward also said that his father’s death felt like a “dreadful shock” but said the 94-year-old queen was “bearing up.” Edward’s wife, Sophie, said the monarch was “thinking of others before herself.”

Prince Edwards also said that  “extraordinary” tributes meant a lot to the royal family.

“It just goes to show, he might have been our father, grandfather, father-in-law, but he meant so much to so many other people,” he said.

It’s been noted that all senior members of the royal family – including Prince Harry – are expected to attend Prince Philip’s funeral at Windsor Castle amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with a service at St. George’s Chapel — where Harry and Meghan wed in 2018.
