Ukraine on Wednesday announced that they would be calling upon reservists aged 18-60 following a decree by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The maximum service period is one year. This, of course, follows Russia’s invasion into Ukraine that has been led full steam ahead by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin has recognized two areas of eastern Ukraine as “independent” and plans on taking those areas back for Russia. Ukraine has accused Russia of destroying peace discussions on ending an 8-year-old conflict in eastern Ukraine. Russia was demanding that Ukraine back out of its ambitions to join the NATO alliance.
President Of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy Has Started Drafting Reservists 18-60 Years Old
While there is no immediate need for general mobilization, Zelenskyy wants to promptly replenish the Ukrainian army and other military formations.
“As the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, I issued a decree on the conscription of reservists during a special period. We must increase the readiness of the Ukrainian army for all possible changes in the operational situation.”
He also publicly criticized foreign embassies and Ukrainian businessmen for leaving the country, explaining that their enterprises are protected by the Ukrainian military.
Ukraine, as well as Western countries, have accused Russia of instigating the conflict in eastern Ukraine, though Moscow has always denied doing so and demanded that Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, hold direct talks with the separatist leader whose legitimacy Ukraine does not recognize.
Russia has continued to move in, dropping shells, moving tanks, and taking helicopters into Ukraine. Several helicopters have been shot out of the sky, and tanks and other vehicles have been stopped for now, though it looks like Putin is not willing to let this go.
