The parents of Lady Gabriella Windsor’s late husband, Thomas Kingston, break their silence and share an important warning about anti-depressants after their son committed suicide.
Thomas Kingston “Suffered Adverse Effects Of A Medication He Had Recently Been Prescribed”
The financer was only 45 years old and was married to Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter five years before he tragically took his own life.
Lady Gabriella Windsor’s husband passed away from a head injury, and a gun was discovered near his body at his parent’s home in Cotswolds.
The coroner who examined his body claimed he committed suicide while
“suffering adverse effects of a medication he had recently been prescribed.”
Apparently, Kingston was initially given Sertraline (Zoloft) , a drug used to treat depression, and Zopiclone (Zopitran), which is used to treat insomnia and help the patient sleep.
A GP gave him these medications at the Royal Mews Surgery, a medical practice at Buckingham Palace utilized by royal household staff.
Kingston was having trouble sleeping following stress at work. However, he went back and claimed these drugs weren’t helping him, and the doctor took him off Sertraline and prescribed him Citalopram (Celexa).
Both medications are serotonin reuptake inhibitors and are commonly prescribed. In the days leading up to his death, he had stopped taking the drug.
Toxicology tests showed that he had caffeine and trace amounts of zopiclone in his system. In a discussion with BBC Radio 4’s Today Program this week, Thomas’s mother, Jill Kingston, explained that he had visited with his parents, and they spent time reading and relaxing by the fire.
Doctors Should Be More Forthcoming About Potential Side-Effects Of Medications
“He was fun,”
She said.
“We were laughing about various things.”
Thomas took the dogs for a walk, and his father, Martin Kingston, came home to find Thomas missing.
Martin said he figured Thomas had gone to a room in the house where he had kept his stuff.
“When I went up, it was all quiet, and he wasn’t up there, so I went back to the house and checked his room, and all his bags were all ready to go back to London, so I went back up, and that’s when I noticed the locked door,”
He confirmed.
Martin felt future deaths could be prevented. He asserted that there was a need for more honest conversations between doctors and their patients. He called for doctors to be more forthcoming about the potential side effects of medication. This should include what can happen if someone suddenly stops taking it.
The couple believes patients should also sign a document saying they have been informed about the difficulties of going on and coming off the medication.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of talking therapy. Therapy is intended to help with mental health conditions. It should be considered and more often made available to the patient.
That being said, Thomas’s mother recognized that many people benefit from anti-depressants as she knows several people who take them.
Martin fought back tears, saying,
“I would like him to be remembered as someone with a big smile on his face while helping people do difficult things.”
Thomas’s father described his son as a
“joyful, giving, full of life, and caring person.”
