Oprah Winfrey has backpedaled her opinion of the diabetes and weight loss drug Ozempic. Oprah had criticized people for turning to drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss because she had initially said,
“That’s the easy way out”
Having recently acquired about 3,700 shares of WeightWatchers® stock, Oprah is now singing a different tune. She apologized, saying she didn’t mean to “diss” people for taking these trendy weight loss drugs.
This past weekend, Oprah told The Wall Street Journal that she believes prescription weight loss drugs are “an important and viable option.” for those who have difficulty with their weight, and it is causing them poor health.
WeightWatchers Started Pushing Weight Loss Drugs
WeightWatcher stock went down on September 21st, and some investors believed it was because of Oprah’s prior remarks about Ozempic, as it fell to double digits. WeightWatchers can be credited with helping Oprah lose about forty pounds.
WeightWatchers has consistently been recognized for its point-based system to help its members count calories and stick to a regimen of low-point options. They have historically focused on nutrition and exercise.
This past July, WeightWatcher started pushing weight loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy®. They started offering Ozempic to members on a subscription basis through Sequence memberships.
A Sequence membership is a subscription service that connects members with providers who can prescribe these weight loss drugs.
When Oprah Winfrey seemingly “changed her mind” about these weight loss drugs, WeightWatchers stock went back up.
The Way Ozempic Works
Some people struggle to eat healthy, while others have been cursed with having a larger frame or high BMI that they can’t control.
These problems are why weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have become so popular in this country. These drugs work by slowing down the emptying of your stomach, curbing your appetite, and making you eat less.
You feel fuller and don’t eat as much food as a result. Ozempic was FDA-approved to treat obesity, while Wegovy was approved strictly for weight management. People who struggle with their weight are sometimes prescribed Ozempic for off-label use.
Using Ozempic for weight loss is a double-edged sword because there have been shortages of this drug for people with diabetes who are prescribed this drug as a means of saving their lives.
Celebrities Are Jumping on The Band Wagon
Recently, celebrities have made headlines for using these drugs to get thin as quickly as possible. It is unfair to the people who legitimately need it to stabilize their blood sugar. Individuals with diabetes should be the first ones to have access to this medication.
That being said, some people may honestly struggle and are prediabetic or have health issues due to their weight. These people may benefit from using these drugs temporarily.
However, weight loss should be accomplished through healthy eating and exercise, no matter the situation. Many people have unrealistic expectations about weight loss.
Oprah Winfrey probably said what she said at first to make herself appear to be above using these drugs as a way to lose weight. Hence, the comment about it being the easy way out.
Oprah now acts like that’s not what she said and is saying something completely different because she is involved with WeightWatchers again.
Oprah has been slammed in the past because of her false presentation. Perhaps this is one example of that.
