Another Will Smith project has been trashed after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Netflix has reportedly canceled the sequel to 2017’s ‘Bright’ starring Will Smith according to a Bloomberg source. National Geographic has also reportedly delayed the production of ‘Pole to Pole’, a nature series that follows Smith as he visits the North and South poles.
The Oscar slap has caused Smith to be banned from attending the award show for the next decade, however, he was allowed to keep the Best Actor award that he had won later that same night. Smith also resigned from the Academy earlier this month because of the incident.
Netflix’s ‘Bright’ Sequel Reportedly Trashed After Will Smith Oscar Slap
While it’s definitely understandable, it’s a big bummer for Netflix and fans of the film. ‘Bright’ was Netflix’s most expensive film at the time of its release and was a refreshing original film that explored a world where fantastical creatures like fairies, elves, and orcs coexisted with humans, even working on the police force together.
Smith’s character’s new partner was an orc, and it was a story of discrimination and a journey into another world that was revered for its originality. We’ve been expecting a sequel for years, and finally, on the heels of getting one, Smith slaps Rock at the Oscars and now it’s been scrapped.
Perhaps in the future, there will still be a chance to see a continuation of the story, or maybe they will do a sequel without Smith. Either way, there were many fans looking forward to the sequel, this comes as a blow.
