The world of music was shocked to hear that Fred White, the drummer from Earth, Wind, and Fire has died. He was 67 years old and his brother, Verdine White, who is also in the band, shared this heartbreaking news on his Instagram account on Sunday.

Music: The Family Shares Their Sadness

Verdine wrote to his fans and followers, “Dearest Family, Friends, and Fans… Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member, our beloved brother, Frederick Eugene “Freddie” White. He joins our brothers Maurice, Monte, and Ronald in heaven and is now drumming with the angels.  Child protege’, member of the EWF ORIGINAL 9, with gold records at the young age of 16 years old. He was brother number 4 in the family lineup. But more than that at home and beyond, he was the wonderful bro that was always entertaining and delightfully mischievous! And we could always count on him to make a seemingly bad situation more light-hearted! He will live in our hearts forever, rest in power beloved Freddie! We thank all of you for your love, blessings, and support at this time. Soar high baby bro, we love you to the shining stars and back!”

The cause of Freddie’s death has yet to be revealed and Verdine did get a lot of positive thoughts in response to his post. One of his first followers to comment was Lenny Kravitz. He wrote, “Sending my love and deepest condolences to you and the family. I was blessed to have been in his presence and blessed to have been influenced by him. A true king. Rest in power.” Sheila E. also wrote to Verdine, “He was a mentor, an amazing drummer, and a man who had the biggest heart. To be able to stand next to him and watch his technique and listen to his playing was remarkable! I will never forget it.”

Questlove shared a very lengthy post honoring Freddie, “When it comes to “who was the spark that inspired me to drum?” Truth be told? I clocked in a fazillion hours listening to and idolizing the great Fred White. He was also one of the first left-handed drummers I ever saw. The live shows were super epic because they were the first out the gate to introduce theatrics and magic for black concerts levitating and lasers and explosions and whatnot.”

The world of music is holding a candle for the White family and the other members of Earth, Wind, and Fire.
