With the Country Music Awards now behind us, we have seen a lot of love and affection coming from some of our favorite country music stars, and CMT host, Cody Alan, is one of them. He recently released his new memoir called Hear’s the Thing. In the book, he talks about how his faith has changed and how his family reacted when he came out to them as gay in 2017.

Before Cody came out to his family and the public, he had to think about his faith. He was raised in Columbia, South Carolina, and in a very religious household. He then converted to Mormonism when he was a teenager. He went on a mission with his church and met a woman that he married. The couple ended up having two children and was in the Mormon faith. He battled with quite a few things during his marriage. His sexuality was one of them.

Cody knew that he was gay for a long time and definitely found it as a struggle. He and his wife, divorced in 2009. She supported him to no end about coming out as gay and this helped him a lot. They are still very close and with her help, he slowly began to come out to his friends and family. One of his close friends, Keith Urban was the first country music artist that he told he was gay.
Alan told fans, “It was a confirmation to me that I was headed in the right direction. Keith responded with compassion, love, and acceptance.” Religion was a big issue for Cody as well. Of course, he has gone through a lot with it over the past few years, and coming out really did change that.
He said, “I think when you grow up religious, as I did, there is a way that you were taught right, wrong- everything is black and white, it’s one way or the other. And the truth is, particularly when it comes to sexuality, there are lots of shades, and understanding that as I did later in my life really helped me, because I understood we’re clearly all different.”
Alan is as happy as he can be today and feels that coming out was one of the best things to happen to him. He has a huge family, with children who love him for who he is. He continues to spend time with his ex-wife and he is very close to her current boyfriend.
