The Senate is scheduled to reassemble Monday after a 40-day recess, and the Capitol doctor has put an end to rumors that Mitch McConnell, the minority leader and 81-year-old senator from Kentucky, had a stroke or a seizure following his second “freeze-up” event last week.

Following his second recent public meltdown during a news conference in Kentucky, where he remained silent for 30 seconds after being asked if he will seek reelection in 2026, McConnell’s health has come under increased scrutiny.

The incident was a carbon copy of the senator’s first incident of freezing, which happened at a Capitol news conference in July. Additionally, it occurs not long after McConnell was hospitalized for treatment after falling and hitting his head in the D.C. Waldorf Astoria, sustaining a concussion and a broken rib.

According to a statement sent by the minority leader’s office on Tuesday in advance of his return, Capitol Physician Dr. Brian Monahan stated that there is “no evidence” that McConnell had a stroke, seizure, or has a “movement disorder” like Parkinson’s disease.

The doctor said that in making his decision, he sought advice from neurologists and looked at McConnell‘s MRIs and an EEG study. Since the senator’s accident and concussion in March, he says that there have been “no changes in recommended treatment protocols.”

For older lawmakers like McConnell and Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, who is also experiencing public health concerns, the limitations would help restore “human decency,” according to Rep.

Dean Phillips, D-Minn. “It’s time for term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court, and some basic human decency.” Phillips wrote.

The 90-year-old senator from California, who is a Democrat, was sent to the hospital earlier this month after falling and tripping at her San Francisco home, prompting his condemnation of the senator.

Her capacity to perform her duties as a senator has been called into even greater doubt following the most recent health episode, despite the fact that testing revealed she was well and she was discharged.
