Meghan Markle is a self-professed dog lover with a few pups of her own. Shortly after she joined the royal family, she started her work at Mayhew, an animal welfare charity in London.
Meghan Donated a Wing For Mayhew to Help the Rescue Dogs
Meghan donated a new wing for the Mayhew in honor of her friend, dog behaviorist, and trainer, Oli Juste, who passed on suddenly in January 2022. The new wing is designated as the Oli Juste Wing. Her donation will help to continue his legacy.
The Duchess of Sussex sent a personal video message in his memory. The staff played the video as patrons looked on. In the video message, Meghan said,
“A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful team at Mayhew who have worked tirelessly to bring this team to life. It was so important to find a way to celebrate Oli’s memory in a manner that he would have loved. Mayhew is a beacon of hope for those in need and a shining example of what can be achieved if we work together.”
Meghan and Oli had a lot in common: a love for rescue dogs. The generous donation helped the charity refurbish the kennels and provide warm shelter for the pups.
Her donation will also significantly improve the dog run and garden for the animals’ enrichment and exercise. It gives them a better experience while waiting for their “furever” homes.
The photograph displayed on Prince Harry and Meghan’s new internet site was of her petting an adorable and adoring pup at the charity. Meghan Markle has repeatedly said that Mayhew is her favorite animal welfare charity in the UK. She was a patron from 2019 to 2022, still keeping her role in a private capacity after she and Harry transferred to California in January 2020.
Meghan Markle Is Continuing Oli Juste’s Legacy
Sherine Wheeler, who is chief executive of Mayhew, said,
“Thanks to the generosity of the Duchess of Sussex, our former royal patron, we have been able to make key improvements to our spaces for dogs in our care and create a comfortable and stimulating environment for them, a fitting legacy for Oli’s dedication to improving the lives of dogs.”
The compassion shown by Meghan and the organization will help many animals that deserve it.
Harry and Meghan’s three rescue dogs include a seven-year-old beagle named Mamma Mia, a black Lab named Pula, and another beagle named Guy.
Juste and his impending husband, Rob, took care of Harry and Meghan’s beagle, Guy, when the couple had just relocated to the UK, and she was recuperating from an accident. They loved him like family. He was a very passionate dog enthusiast and an avid rescuer.
Rob posted a touching tribute to Juste at the time of his death and said that his family surrounded him, along with friends and loved ones at the hospital. Even their beloved dog, Benard, could spend Juste’s final moments with him.
Mayhew doesn’t just help our canine companions but also our feline companions with care and finding them homes. The charity is instrumental in their work for pets internationally, not just in the UK. Meghan encourages others to support this charity and other charities devoted to our furry friends.
