Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are “great at getting attention,” claims Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos.
Netflix is NOT dropping Harry and Meghan’s Deal
During a recent public speaking engagement, Sarandos put an end to all the rumors that Harry and Meghan would be dropped from their Netflix deal the way they were with their Spotify one.
Harry and Meghan contracted a multi-million-dollar agreement with the streaming giant in September 2020. The couple succeeded with their documentary about their love story, “Harry and Meghan.”
“The documentary we did on them is still one of our most-watched documentaries of all time on Netflix, and huge, particularly in the UK, where people just devour everything about them,”
Sarandos exclaimed.
They’re controversial, but that’s usually a good thing. You may love them or hate them, but you’re watching.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry haven’t generated much heat since then. Harry made a noble effort with his documentary, “Heart of Invictus.”
Invictus is a multi-sport competition for the disabled, handicapped, and wounded veterans. It is a worthy cause, and the docuseries received stellar reviews.
Their docuseries, “Live to Lead” was a flop and was compared to “eating your greens,” meaning that it’s good for you but not highly entertaining.
“Live to Lead” was inspired by Nelson Mandela and focused on solid leadership and activists. Many legendary names were interviewed, but not by Harry and Meghan directly. These motivational figures included Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Gloria Steinem.
Meghan’s animated children’s series, “Pearl,” was dropped, sparking rumors that the couple were done at Netflix. The series sounded interesting enough.
The Sussexes Are Set To Release Scripted Content
It was to be about the adventures of a little girl based on the Duchess, whom influential female figures throughout history would inspire.
But Netflix executives didn’t think that kids would care about it. That being said, they are still excited about the upcoming content from Harry and Meghan.
The Sussexes’ Archewell Productions will also be releasing new scripted content. The company will develop Carley Fortune’s “Meet Me at the Lake” into a romantic film.
They also have a scripted series they are working on. On the scripted aspect of their Netflix deal, Sarandos had this to say,
“And I do think they are also going to be very strong storytellers, with great exposure to the media in terms of what people want to talk about, what they think about, and they’re great at getting attention.”
A source close to the couple said,
“There will be more of a heavy focus on fictional, scripted content. It will be romcoms, feel-good, and lighthearted programs.”
Harry and Meghan will also be executive producers, so they have more time for other projects, charity work, and family life.
The Duke and Duchess’s Netflix deal is said to last until 2025. Even with Sarandos’s enthusiasm, Netflix may not renew Harry and Meghan’s deal.
Meghan talked about the new content that she and Harry were producing for Netflix in November 2023 at Variety’s Power of Women event,
“We have so many exciting things on the slate. I can’t wait until we can announce them, but I’m just really proud of what we’re creating and my husband is loving it too.”
