Matthew Perry has paid tribute to his Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston for her efforts to help him when he was destroying himself through addiction. Perry makes his comments in the trailer for his interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, marking the publication of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. Here’s what he has to say.

During the interview, Perry recounts how Aniston confronted him about his drinking. “Imagine how scary a moment that was,” he says.

“She was the one that reached out the most,” the 53-year-old continues. “I’m really grateful to her for that.” Billed as “emotional”, “raw” and “brutally honest”, the interview sees Perry tell Sawyer that when he should have been “the toast of the town”, he was “in a dark room, meeting with nothing but drug dealers – and completely alone.” Sawyer hears that Perry was consuming methadone, the tranquilizer Xanax, a full quart of vodka a day and 55 Vicodin painkillers a day.

Of his decision to tell his story now, he says: “It was important to me to do something that would help people.” Meanwhile, Perry has also admitted that he was once on the brink of death. He waited until now to share the extreme depths of his addiction because he wanted to make sure he is “safe from going into the dark side of everything again.”

He opens his book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, with the revelation he almost died a few years ago aged 49, the outlet said. After his colon burst from opioid abuse, he spent two weeks in a coma and five months in hospital and had to use a colostomy bag for nine months.

He said: “The doctors told my family that I had a 2% chance to live. I was put on a thing called an Ecmo machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that’s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”
