Conservative commentator Matt Walsh began a GoFundMe for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s grandmother after AOC had tweeted about her ‘abuela’s’ terrible living conditions in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

    AOC had tweeted out,

“Just over a week ago, my Abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her- my 1st time in a year+ bc of COVID. This is her home,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted along with images of her grandmother’s damaged residents. “Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR. People are being forced to flee ancestral homes, & developers are taking them.”

Walsh responded to the tweet thread, saying, “Shameful that you live in luxury while allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these squalid conditions,” to which AOC responded, “You don’t even have a concept for the role that 1st-gen, first-born daughters play in their families. My abuela is okay. But instead of only caring for mine & letting others suffer, I’m calling attention to the systemic injustices you seem totally fine w/ in having a US colony.”

This drove Walsh to launch a GoFundMe and they exceeded its $48,990 goal in less than two days. At one point it was over $100,000 before being taken down.

On Saturday, there was an update from GoFundMe saying that AOC’s abuela would not accept the money that was raised and all the donors would be issued a refund.

“Someone” in AOC’s abuela’s family told GoFundMe that she won’t take our money, even though AOC previously claimed that her grandma was in dire straits (and it was Trump’s fault). AOC still hasn’t acknowledged this effort or thanked us. Instead, she seems to think that it is worth $104,153 of her abuela’s money to express that doesn’t want money from the likes of us. Abuela could have accepted the money and donated it to charity, but it seems AOC preferred to insult the 5.800 people who donated,” the update said.

What do you think? Should AOC’s abuela have accepted the money? Let us know in the comments below.
