Facebook is rebranding its company name as soon as next week according to The Verge. The name change, which Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th (which could happen sooner), is meant to signal ambition to be known for more than just social media.
The new name would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of the many products under the parent company that also oversees things like Instagram.
Facebook is already using its resources to build consumer hardware like the AR glasses the Zuckerberg believes will one day be as normal as smartphones. In July he spoke about how the next several yeas will be a transition,
“We will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”
Facebook Reportedly Considering A Name Change To Focus On The Metaverse
Facebook isn’t the first to do this and to focus on a wider agenda. Companies like Google have rebranded under Alphabet to signal it’s no longer just a search engine but also a company that creates driverless cars and health technology. Whereas Snapchat rebranded to Snap Inc. when it started calling itself a camera company and made its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses.
The new name is closely guarded, even among its senior leadership, though many think a possible name could have something to do with Horizon, the name of an unreleased VR version of Facebook that the company has been working on over the past few years.
Whatever the name change is, it’ll be weird to see the company behind Facebook become something else, but interesting to see what they develop in the future. For better or for worse is the question.
