It looks like King Charles III get lucky in this one. Next year’s Northern Ireland local council elections are to be moved to avoid a clash with the King’s coronation. Here’s what you need to know.
A Northern Irish minister by the name of Steve Baker has written to NI political party leaders on Wednesday to advise them to move the date of local elections to May 18, 2023. This current date of Thursday May 4 is close to the coronation date on Saturday May 6. Counting would likely clash with the evening. In a tweet, Mr Baker said that to ensure “smooth running” of the elections and the counting of votes, he had advised party leaders to move the date.

Meanwhile, there’s another controversy that the king wants to avoid. Reports say there’s a possibility that King Charles III might reach out to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – but through an audience of millions of people. In fact, there’s a possibility that the king’s speech might contain an olive branch to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
One source close to the situation said, “We have the first ever King’s speech on TV, in the TV era. It’s kind of an incredible thing. I’m excited about it actually. I think when the King did his first speech to the nation and the world after the late Queen’s passing it was one of togetherness. It has been recorded. We don’t know the full content of it but you can bet your bottom dollar it will be about togetherness, the late Queen, Harry and Meghan might get a mention. Maybe that will be the olive branch.”
Charles has already recorded his Christmas broadcast – the queen made her first Christmas broadcast from Sandringham in 1952 – and intends to uphold the very same traditions, which, apart from a turkey lunch, also includes a visit to St Mary Magdalene Church and the greeting of well-wishers. So far Buckingham Palace has not made any comments about the matter.
