We recently found out that Kate Middleton has been diagnosed with cancer. The timing of the announcement coincided with Easter break.
Kate had planned abdominal surgery in January and was said to be recovering comfortably at her home in Windsor. By February, everyone was frantic, wanting to know where Kate was.
The Public Demanded To Know Kate’s Whereabouts
Speculation peaked when Prince William was unexpectedly absent from his late Godfather, King Constantine’s memorial service. By then, the public was very vocal, demanding knowledge of Kate’s whereabouts.
Kate Middleton understood that the whole world was wondering what was happening to her. She wanted to shield her children, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte, as much as possible.
No doubt the Wales were already suffering at the hands of online conspiracy theorists. The era of social media is brand spanking new to a centuries-old monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth always believed in the adage, “Never complain, never explain.” This doesn’t exactly work in these days of TikTok, X (Formerly known as Twitter), and any other online platform where it’s so easy for someone to create a rumor that can spread worldwide.
A former palace aide spoke to “People” magazine and said that the interest in Kate’s condition was a “complex reaction.” For the better part of thirteen years, people would regularly see Princess Catherine, and then suddenly, she was absent from the public eye, and the palace remained silent.
People think they have the right to know what happens with high-profile celebrities, royals, and the like. People are naturally curious but tend to go bonkers when they get behind the keyboard.
Conspiracy Theories About Kate Middleton on Social Media Were Rampant And Ongoing
Some of the conspiracy theories about Kate include: she was cloned, she had a Brazilian butt lift, got a bad haircut and was waiting for it to grow out, she was in a coma.
The monarchy vehemently denied the last one and ignored the rest. The palace was very guarded about Kate’s health, which only served to further the speculation.
Some online trolls even dared to comment that Kate was being granted a level of privacy that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were never given.
However, the difference is that Kate doesn’t ask everyone to pay attention to her. She’s a team player and works with the monarchy instead of against it.
Of course, the doctored family photo didn’t help the situation. It fueled even more speculation and rumors. News media pulled the photo from circulation.
Not only that, but people were now making fun of kind, sweet Kate Middleton. In the middle of contending with her diagnosis, Kate was forced to apologize for the picture.
Online Trolls Apologized Only When They Found Out About Kate’s Diagnosis
Once Kate revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer, all the conspiracy theorists, including famous folks like Kim Kardashian and Blake Lively, feverishly apologized for their rude comments.
Comments were deleted, and online trolls collectively felt “guilty” and “terrible” now that they knew Kate was sick.
People were embarrassed for having said unkind words about Kate, as they should have been. It was never their right to know in the first place.
It’s a challenge for the modern-day royal to know what respectable privacy, sharing, and oversharing are. Queen Elizabeth was very much against oversharing.
“Never complain, never explain” may be old-school, but Kate’s right to privacy was ignored entirely. People are very brave behind the keyboard, and it just goes to show that the royals were right not to respond to social media conspiracy chatter and nonsense.
