Kate Middleton made a surprise joint appearance with Prince William and shared the emotional details about her cancer ordeal with volunteers at Charing Cross Hospital in London.
Kate and William Joined the Surprise Tea Party for Volunteers and Staff
Catherine and William surprised the staff and volunteers when they arrived. The royal couple spoke with them as Kate bonded with one volunteer who worked closely with chemotherapy patients.
The volunteers said that cancer patients and visitors have to “sit there for hours” as they undergo treatment. The Princess agreed as she gently touched William’s arm, and they empathized, “We know.”
William told the staff,
“Both of us have had different experiences with hospitals. Me, working with the air ambulance; Catherine with her recent health journey.”
He continued,
“And coming here today and reminding ourselves just how important all the teams are, all the staff, the patients. It’s so heartwarming, and it’s important that we acknowledge and appreciate all that goes on in the NHS and that very strong bond between patient and carer.”
Kate and William also joined the surprise tea party for volunteers and staff to thank them for all their hard work and dedication.
William remarked,
“Happy New Year.”
He jokingly peered down at his watch and asked,
“Can we still say that?”
The Princess of Wales also acknowledged that cancer is a “quite daunting experience.” She added, “From a patient’s experience, it’s important things in the job description, such as kindness and compassion.”
William also discussed the importance of philanthropy in the NHS, calling it “powerful.” He said that donations need to grow, as NHS charity needs that “momentum.”
The future King praised,
“As joint patrons of NHS Charities Together, we are so fortunate, so proud of everything that is being done around Charities Together.”
Kate Believes In Employing Nature and Creativity as Part of the Healing Process
Kate was having a candid conversation with a patient, she said,
“I was just saying that you need the medical support, but actually being able to have the sort of holistic support alongside it, it must help the days go past.”
The Princess of Wales also pointed out that it was “fantastic” to have spaces for holistic care. Kate has consistently chronicled how her connection to nature and her creativity have helped her and played a massive role in her recovery.
William and Kate also visited the hospital’s neuro-rehabilitation center, where patients participated in gym therapy and arts and crafts.
Kate spoke with a patient, and she told them,
“You need medical support, but also a holistic approach.”
She compared staying in the hospital for a long period to
“Groundhog Day.”
Kate laughed heartily when the patient said they had been in the hospital on Christmas Day and enjoyed eating Brussels sprouts at dinner.
At the activity center, the royal couple also met patients who are learning to walk again while othere were having fun and playing games.
Kate remarked,
“It must be nice to be doing things like this as a distraction from medical things. Activities and nature have been a huge part of my recovery journey.”
The event was William and Kate’s first royal engagement of the year. Kate revealed in January 2025 that she was in remission from cancer as she made an emotional appearance at Royal Marsden Hospital, where she had received chemotherapy treatment.
