He’s had enough of all the drama, you guys. John Legend and Kanye West were once close friends. The pair met when they were both up-and-coming musicians; West helped Legend bag his first record deal. However, in recent years the two have drifted apart. In a recent episode of The Axe Files podcast, the All of Me singer opened up about why their friendship ended. Here’s what he has to say.

“We aren’t friends as much as we used to be,” Legend told David Axelrod. “I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump. I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship.”

The 43-year-old added that West was upset that he didn’t support his run for presidency in 2020 “for understandable reasons,” reports Variety.

“I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then,” said Legend.

Meanwhile, back in July it was announced that Kanye was being sued for $7 million. Reports say that Phantom Labs worked on projects including the musician’s Donda 2livestream release, a Free Larry Hoover concert with Drake and his canceled 2022 Coachella performance. According to legal documents obtained by media outlets, the firm claims West promised the fees would be paid following his headline slot at the world-famous music festival, which ultimately did not go ahead.

“We are incredibly proud of the work that we did with Ye and are disappointed that such a fruitful relationship has come to this,” a spokesperson for Phantom Labs said, in a statement provided to Variety. “A celebrity weaponising fame and reputation to take advantage of eager collaborators is simply unacceptable.”

The lawsuit alleges that a total debt of $7,154,177.67 was accrued between June 2021 and March 2022. The documents acknowledge that the company was paid for some of its early work, but indicate that those payments arrived only under pressure. So far Kanye has not made any comments about the lawsuit.
